Touristification and the expansion of short-term rentals threaten the right to adequate housing: an urgent call to the United Nations and its Member States.
Organizations, networks, grassroots movements, academics, and housing rights advocates have launched a declaration addressed to the United Nations General Assembly, calling attention to the impacts of touristification and the rapid expansion of short-term rentals on the right to adequate housing and the right to the city.
The declaration calls on the United Nations, its Member States, and UN-Habitat to advance international cooperation, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and support local governments in addressing the impacts of housing financialization while protecting the right to adequate housing.
